The bug in Amazon’s software is that when you put a MOBI file on a Kindle, unless the file is marked as a Personal document, Amazon assumes you bought the book from it and tries to download the cover thumbnail for it from its servers. On my old Android I would have read that one on the Kindle app as well by converting it to mobi-format using Calibre and then uploading it to Amazons personal document store. The latter one is an epub-edition that I bought from Smashwords. To convert epub to the azw format I've tried an online conversion tool and then sending the generated file to myself as an attachment. The former book was a Kindle edition and that one I read it on the Kindle app for Windows 8.
PDF need to be plain text for better conversion. You can convert your PDFs to mobi format but it isn’t that perfect. PDF READERS- Kindle are a treat to read on this.
